About Spudpen

Spudpen is a specialised calculation engine designed to assess the leg penetration behavior of independent jack-up rigs during preloading operations. Spudpen is a critical tool for offshore geotechnical engineers to ensure the stability and safety of jack-up platforms.

About Spudpen

Spudpen leg penetration analysis refers to the calculation of jack-up rig leg penetration behavior during preloading, according to ISO Standard 19905-1 and has been developed in 2012 by the late Steve Kay – a senior geotechnical engineer with over 35+ years of experience in the offshore wind and energy sector.

The main objectives are to predict the final leg penetration depth and identify potential punch-through situations. Spudpen analysis are used to assess the foundation capacity of jack-up rigs, which rely on spudcan footings to spread the load and prevent excessive penetration into the seafloor.

What is Spudpen?

Spudpen is a powerful calculation kernel that performs leg penetration analysis of mobile offshore units by implementing the ISO 19905-1:2023 industry standard.

It is primarily used to:

  • Predict Final Penetration Depth: Estimate the required leg penetration to reach a stable bearing capacity.
  • Identify Geohazards: Pinpoint potential risks such as punch-through situations in layered soil profiles.

Analyse Complex Soil Conditions:
Model multi-layered soil profiles consisting of both sand (drained) and clay (undrained) layers.

ISO 19905-1

Spudpen leg penetration analysis follows ISO Standard 19905-1 (2023) and will be updated accoringly.

The main objectives are to predict the final leg penetration depth and identify potential punch-through situations. Spudpen analyses are used to assess the foundation capacity of jack-up rigs, which rely on spudcan footings to spread the load and prevent excessive penetration into the seafloor.

Deep spudcan penetrations can lead to difficulties during the extraction process, especially in clay soils, due to insufficient rig capacity to overcome the extraction resistance. Conventional methods based on bearing capacity formulas, as well as finite element analyses, are used to calculate spudcan penetration and extraction forces at different locations.

These analyses consider factors such as soil conditions, spudcan geometry, and loading conditions to ensure the jack-up rig can be safely installed and extracted.
